Cortisone Injections

What are cortisone injections?

Cortisone injections are the ideal non-surgical treatment for chronic pain caused by inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, and other underlying conditions. Glen Rock Spine & Rehab provides highly-calibrated cortisone shots to alleviate pain and inflammation, restoring your optimal health, wellness, and mobility.

Cortisone injections, also known as corticosteroids, are treatments consisting of the cortisol hormone, which is naturally produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisone injections respond to injuries and illness, ease inflammation, and reduce immune system activity. They enhance your body’s anti-inflammatory properties to naturally heal the inflammation in your wrist, spine, knee, hip, and ankle joints.

What do cortisone injections treat?

Cortisone injections alleviate the inflammation, pain, and discomfort caused by various immune-related diseases and muscle conditions. As such, cortisone injections are used to treat the following conditions:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Lupus
  • Allergies
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Sciatica
  • Joint pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Gout

How do you prepare for cortisone injections?

  • You might need to stop blood-thinning medications a few days before the treatment.
  • If you take dietary supplements, vitamins, or herbal products that cause blood-thinning, you need to temporarily discontinue them to prevent bruising.
  • Discuss your current medication usage with your physiatrist.

What happens during the cortisone injection procedure?

We perform cortisone injections as in-office and outpatient procedures. Our physiatrists will discuss your symptoms, review your health history, and run advanced diagnostic tests to identify the source of your pain. Once the inflamed region is selected, we prepare the cortisone injections consisting of the corticosteroid and numbing medication.

We carefully identify the ideal treatment area, such as the affected joints, muscles, tendons, spine, or bursae (sacs of fluid between the joints and tendons). The cortisone injection is carefully delivered into the strategically-chosen treatment area — you might feel a pinch as the injection goes in, but the anesthetic will provide immediate comfort.

What’s the frequency of cortisone injections & how soon will I notice the results?

Cortisone injections usually start working in a few days, but some patients notice improvements in just a few hours. The results usually last for 1 to 2 months, but you can extend their results with regular physical activities and therapy.

You shouldn’t get more than 3 to 4 cortisone injections per year. Repeated injections in close intervals can weaken the surrounding bone and skin.
