Deck the Halls Safely this Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is over, and December is upon us bringing visions of dancing sugar plums, peppermint, and tons of Christmas decorations! But decorating your home is no easy task. First, there’s the overwhelming feeling of frustration (I mean, seriously… how is it that they can make a powerful, tiny computer fit into the palm of your hand, but one dead bulb can cause an entire mile-long strand of holiday lights to malfunction!). And then there’s the risk of overdoing it, which can lead to injury and back pain.

Common holiday injuries include falling from a tall ladder and tripping over loose cords and string lights. In addition, poor lifting of heavy objects is another.

Here are a few simple precautions that can help protect your back from injury:

Stretch and strengthen daily. Weak back and abdominal muscles can cause or worsen back pain. Even a short stretching routine can make a huge difference in preventing injury and increasing mobility and done after strengthening exercises, also helps prevent muscle soreness. And don’t underestimate the power of a daily walk to keep you healthy and limber. Keeping mobile is vital for decorating activities such as stretching to put that star way on top of your tree!

Lift carefully. When lifting heavy or awkward items like a Christmas tree, boxes of ornaments or cumbersome boxes of gift wrapping make sure to always squat and bend at the knees to protect your lower back. Never bend at the waist to pick something up. If you already have a weak back, using a back brace will also add more stability to your body.

Avoid hurrying. Rushing causes us to not be mindful of how we lift and carry heavy items. Take your time and remember all your proper lifting techniques.

Don’t overdo it. Listen to any twinges or warning signs your back and joints may be giving you and don’t just ignore them and keep going. Better to be safe than sorry!

Get adjusted regularly. Regular chiropractic adjustments keep your spine in alignment and working properly while increasing joint mobility. Chiropractic care also increases your energy levels, which you’re going to need when you deck those halls to holiday perfection!
